Building a deck with a railing: step by step
Have you decided to build a balcony or deck to get the most out of your outdoor space, or to repair an existing structure? Every deck project is different, but the key steps are usually the same. Here is a practical guide.
Building a new balcony
Whether it is a new structure or a demolition followed by a full rebuild, the process is essentially the same.
1 - Create a plan
Draw a detailed plan of your deck and staircase and take measurements carefully. Review our main building code standards so your deck complies with current regulations, and confirm requirements with your municipality’s urban planning department.
2 - Choose materials
Will you use treated wood, or a lower-maintenance material such as engineered fiberglass flooring? Also choose the railing type needed to secure the deck perimeter and staircase.
3 - Build the foundation and frame
Prepare the foundation and structural frame, whether it is attached to the house or supported by screw piles or Sonotubes.
4 - Build the deck structure
Install the deck floor (fiberglass, treated wood, cedar, composite or aluminum), then the stringers and staircase. Make sure everything is level before installing the railing.
5 - Build the railing
Mark post locations with a chalk line. Posts are typically installed 3.8 cm (1.5 in) from the edge of the balcony.

We recommend pre-drilling the deck floor to prevent splitting. For fiberglass floors, apply sealant in all holes to prevent water infiltration.
Renovating an existing balcony
The approach is similar for renovation projects, but you must verify that any components you keep are strong enough to support the new flooring and railing.
1 - Create your plan
Draw your structure plan and take precise measurements.
2 - Choose your materials
Select and source materials for the structure, floor and railings.
3 - Demolition
Remove the elements you want to replace: railings, floor, staircase, etc.
4 - Inspect and reinforce the balcony structure
Inspect the structure carefully from all sides and ensure it is level.
5 - Install the railing
Install your glass railing, aluminum railing, or another option.
Note that products in our online store are pre-assembled, so you only need to connect and fasten components to the deck.
